High-speed freight trains at night

In two years, freight trains will also circulate on the high-speed lines at night: this was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Graziano Delrio, who explained that this will be a way to compete with the port of Rotterdam

From 2018, freight trains will also circulate on the high-speed lines. But only at night, when the Frecce Rosse and Italo passenger trains are stopped. This was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Graziano Delrio, in an interview with "Corriere della Sera".

According to Delrio, making freight trains circulate on the high-speed rails at night "is a way to take a trump card out of the hands of the port of Rotterdam", which is currently the first port in Europe despite the routes being longer than four days compared to our seaports. But the Dutch, explains the minister, “are first also because once they get there
the containers travel by rail and not by trucks as in our country”.

"By now - added Delrio - environmental sustainability is not only a duty but also a way to win the competition" and Italy also wants to catch up in freight transport, "which has been greatly neglected", if it is true as it is that "today less than 10" of goods transport travels by rail.

Naturally, in order for freight trains to travel on high-speed lines at night, "transport companies will have to adapt wagons and locomotives" and be compatible with the line itself to avoid deformation. The countdown has begun.
