Farmhouses and Covid: a black year ends for thousands of companies, hopefully for Christmas

The three zones – red, orange, yellow – also affect agritourisms. No more sales and consumption of organic products, banquets and career chefs. 140.000 jobs at stake

Farmhouses and Covid: a black year ends for thousands of companies, hopefully for Christmas

The latest anti-Covid Dpcm is affecting a large sector of the Italian economy. The sequence of government measures perplexes the owners who have begun to make themselves heard through the trade associations. Like many of their colleagues, they are in trouble and hope that the situation will improve before Christmas. That on weekends at least, they can rearrange tables and rooms and welcome guests.

It is a dramatic blow to more than one in five companies nationwide, protests Coldiretti. The government's decisions concern 5 regular companies. The alarm is close to 140 seats at the table. In the red and orange critical areas, only home delivery is allowed - explains Coldiretti - as well as catering with take-away until 22 pm, with a ban on consuming on the spot or in the vicinity of the premises. Behind these numbers, there are hundreds of sustainable products from protected agriculture. Direct investments for structures and crops without pesticides. Agritourisms also give a good hand to the production of renewable energies such as biomethane and biomass. Entire supply chains supported by the EU and the government cannot handle the latest decisions. While guided by public health principles, they often do not consider alternative solutions to keep businesses going. The distance between the world of work and politics is reflected in the protests of these days throughout Italy.

More than half of the agritourisms forced to lock down are located between Lombardy and Piedmont, the rest between Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and Valle d'Aosta. However, there are limitations even outside the two most critical ranges. There, catering is only allowed from 5,00 to 18,00 with the always possibility of home delivery with take away at 22.

Coldiretti sends word to the government that most of the companies are located far from urban centres, so it is unthinkable that we are visited by guests during the lunch break. Not to mention that working from home for millions of people has killed entire cities. The hope, short-lived, are the refreshments decided two days ago. But it will take more to repair the damage.
