A pool of investors from Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi is reportedly poised to acquire the Reebok brand. To snatch the British company from Adidas, which acquired Reebok in 2005 for approximately $3,8 billion, an offer of around $2,2 billion (€1,7 billion) is reportedly on the table.
Investors, including (according to the Wall Street Journal) the Jynwell Capital fund, are convinced that the British company, which produces sports goods and accessories, can perform better as an independent brand.
Adidas purchased Reebok in 2005 to try to put pressure on Nike in the US market. However, the project never really took off, and in fact, over the past few years, the market shares of the two European companies in the US have steadily declined, while Nike's continued to grow.
The market, in any case, seems to approve the hypothesis of a sale of Rebook by Adidas: the German company's shares, in fact, gained just under 5% in Frankfurt late this morning.
