Goodbye pylons: Terna renews the Florence electricity grid

The mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, and the CEO of Terna, Luigi Ferraris, presented the action plan for the rationalization of the electricity grid in the Florence area, aimed at its safety, efficiency and sustainability.

The intervention plan, which provides for total investments for 19 million euro in the period 2019-2023, will bring important electrical and environmental benefits to the Florence area: against the construction of approximately 15 km of new underground cable lines, it will indeed be possible demolish about 20 km of old power lines and 78 pylons, thus returning free territory from electricity infrastructures.

Once the interventions have been completed, Terna will also be able to make available approx 11 km of electrical infrastructure set up for optical fiber laying to be used as part of the cabling projects underway in the Tuscan capital.

Among the main interventions:

  • New underground section of the 132 kV line Cascine Primary Substation – Rifredi Primary Substation
  • New underground section of the 132 kV line San Lorenzo a Greve – Peretola primary substation
  • Variation of the 132 kV line for the Casellina electrical substation – Cascine primary substation
  • New underground section of the 132 kV line for the Tavarnuzze – San Lorenzo a Greve power station

For the implementation of the planned interventions, the Municipality of Florence and Terna have activated the most advanced methods of collaboration which will lead to a close and full participation of the local institutions and the population in the definition of the actions on the territory.

Finally, Terna and the Municipality of Florence will jointly study interventions of sustainable mobility through the development of projects for the electrification of public transport or tried.

“The enhancement of local areas is at the heart of Terna's commitment – he declares Luigi Ferraris, CEO of Terna – and the reorganization of the electricity grid presented today is the confirmation of our attention to the sustainability of the works and the artistic heritage of the territories where we operate. The plan that we are committed to implementing, in close collaboration with the Municipality of Florence, will allow us to demolish a large number of pylons by adopting cutting-edge technological solutions aimed at the highest environmental and social sustainability."

“This plan has a great aesthetic advantage of quality for our landscape context – added the mayor Nardella -. With this investment, which is the first of its kind in Terna's history in Florence, we are making some tall and ugly electricity pylons and overhead wires disappear because everything will go underground. The image of Florence will improve more and more and I think the citizens will be very happy, especially those who live near the large pylons that will be eliminated. We also add more security."
