Steel, first agreement on Piombino

The minutes of the meeting between Cevital and the trade union organizations (Fiom Cgil, Fim Cisl, Uilm Uil and Ugl Metalmeccanici) relating to the Piombino plant were signed during the night at the Ministry of Economic Development. The Mise reports it in a note, adding that there remain "some aspects on which to seek a definitive settlement that the parties have explicitly reserved the right to reach during the next meeting". The two sides will meet again on 3 June at 15 pm at the Town Hall of Piombino.

Tonight's is still only a first step towards the agreement but the conditions for closure seem to be defined. In fact, the head of production sectors of the CGIL Salvatore Barone underlined that with the agreement reached with the ministry "after three consecutive days of negotiations a new chapter opens in the troubled history of the Piombino steelworks".

Through the agreement signed at the Mise, the conditions have been set for the transfer of 2.200 workers of the former Lucchini to the new company headed by the Algerian group Cevital. The agreement effectively establishes the transfer of the company branches and therefore the launch of the new iron and steel, logistics and agro-industrial activities, on the basis of the agreed industrial plan, which provides for investments of 700 million euros.

Workers who gradually switch to Cevital by 6 November 2016 will be subject to the national employment contract and the length of service accrued will be recognised, in particular in terms of seniority increases and holidays. There will be further improvements compared to the contract for shift and night surcharges. It is expected that on 3 June this agreement will be transformed into a definitive agreement, to be implemented directly between the parties in Piombino.
