73 works on display coming from important national and international cultural institutions, such as the Belvedere of Vienna, the Academy of Fine Arts of Vienna, the Austrian National Library, the Castle of Fontainebleau and Versailles. as well as from the collection Intesa Sanpaolo.
It was during the reign of Joachim Murat and Carolina Bonaparte the most important decade that saw French masters of the genre at their court, such as Simon Denis, Alexadre Dunouy, Auguste de Forbin, and the Viennese Joseph Rebel, and innovators of landscape art.
This is the first exhibition dedicated to Joseph Rebell (Vienna 1787 – Dresden 1828)
His was a painting characterized by romantic landscapes with a taste between Neoclassicism and Romanticism. His example was fundamental for the Dutch Antoon Sminck Pitloo and for the generation of artists of Posillipo School.
Rebell's works are compared for the first time with the landscape artists of his time: Michael Wutky, who was his teacher, Pierre-Jacques Volaire, Simon Denis, Alexander Dunouy, Louis de Forbin, Johan Christian Dahl.
On display are the youthful portraits of Joachim and Carolina Murat, the portrait of Napoleon in imperial coronation dress, numerous views of the Gulf of Naples and the magnificent surroundings, Vesuvius, representations of the Amalfi Coast and the Islands, but also the drawings and preparatory studies.
The exhibition, edited by Sabine Grabner, Luisa Martorelli, Fernando Mazzocca and Gennaro Toscano, is made in partnership with the Belvedere Museum in Vienna and with the collaboration of the Institut Français of Naples and makes use of the patronage of the Municipality of Naples.
