FiberCop transforms old power plants: over 100 edge data centers for the new digital network.

The technological evolution plan is underway, with the first site already operational in Rome and new openings planned in five Italian cities. The goal is to bring computing power and digital services closer to businesses, local communities, and public administrations.

FiberCop start a new technological evolution plan which will lead to the creation of a national network composed of over 100 edge data centers distributed throughout Italy. The project includes the transformation of telecommunications exchanges, already fundamental elements of the access network, into new digital hubs capable of integrating connectivity, computing capacity and data management, offering client operators a platform to support the development of innovative services for businesses, territories and public administrations.

The first edge data center is already active in Rome, while in the next few months new sites will be launched Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Naples and Palerm.

Artificial intelligence and digital services closer to businesses and territories

The new infrastructure allows to bring the computing ability to data and end users, with the aim of supporting services that require faster response times and more efficient information management. The use of edge computing also allows for the promotion of applications based onartificial intelligence, offering businesses and public administrations tools to improve process management and resource use.

From experiments to the new infrastructure model

The project is preceded by a phase of experimentation started by FiberCop in December 2025 with national edge cloud solutions. In March 2026, the company presented the first experiments to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, demonstrating the use of the access network as a distributed platform for advanced digital services.

The construction of the edge data centers is part of the broader technological evolution plan for FiberCop's power plants, which includes the decommissioning of traditional copper infrastructure and the gradual transition to fiber. Through research investments promoted by the Innovation Hub and collaborations with universities, centers of excellence, and industry associations, FiberCop participates in the development of technologies dedicated to digital transformation and infrastructure security.

The company is also involved in national and international research programs aimed at strengthening the resilience of digital networks and promoting solutions for the protection of communications and data, including Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).

FiberCop, the fiber network serving operators

FiberCop provides operators with 28 million kilometers of fiber optics and ultrabroadband coverage of over 96% of active lines. FTTH (Fiber To The Home) technology reaches approximately 46% of domestic homes.

With its plan for over 100 edge data centers, the company aims to integrate distributed data processing and management capabilities into its network infrastructure.
