Volvo-Uber, alliance for self-driving cars

Swedish automaker Volvo has announced an alliance with private car transportation service Uber to offer self-driving car service, with plans to invest $300 million in the project. “Uber and Volvo will use the same base vehicle for the next phase of their respective self-driving car strategies. Uber – explains the Swedish group in a note – will apply the autonomous driving systems it has developed to a Volvo base vehicle”.

Both companies are well advanced in developing these cars of the future, which will allow passengers to be driven to their destinations without driving. Volvo engineers have been testing the first models on the streets of Gothenburg (south-west Sweden) since 2014 and are expected to deliver them to drivers in Gothenburg and London in 2017.
