Utilities: 2011 million saved in 40 thanks to investments in energy efficiency

In 2011, public and local service companies in the water, energy and environment sectors will save around 40,3 million euros in bills thanks to investments in energy efficiency. This is what emerges from the study "Utilities facing the challenge of energy efficiency: water, environment, energy and transport" carried out by Utilitatis and Hermes-Asstra, for Dexia Crediop.

According to Utilitatis, the companies involved in urban sanitation invested approximately 2,7 million euros in the three-year period 2008/2010: one million in the rationalization of waste collection logistics and 1,7 million in the recovery of biogas from landfills, obtaining savings on bills of 1,1 million euros and a reduction in emissions of 7,9 million tons of CO2 in 2011. In the three-year period 2008/2010, public energy companies invested 302 million euros and 251 in the next one to save energy in dispensing.

A large part of these resources was allocated to the construction of cogeneration plants, the replacement of turbines, alternators and transformers as well as the uniformity of voltage in the networks. Approximately 26 million euros have been invested in the installation of photovoltaic panels. Thanks to these expenses, in 2011, the costs incurred by public companies will decrease by 28,8 million euros with positive effects also in environmental terms: CO2 emissions will be approximately 564,4 million tons lower.
