EU, Rehn: we are waiting for a signal from Italy

The vice president of the European Commission and commissioner for economic and monetary affairs expects our country to adopt the promised measures by the end of the week – As for the inspectors, “we have not set a date for the end of the mission. We still don't know when we will present our report."

EU, Rehn: we are waiting for a signal from Italy

Europe anxiously awaits Italy's vote and approval of the Stability Law, and expects "the two Houses of the Italian Parliament to adopt it this weekend", so as to "send a clear message of confidence" to the markets. These are the requests and wishes of the European Commission, expressed in a press conference by Olivier Bailly, spokesman for the vice president of the EU Commission and Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Olli Rehn.

"At the moment what is important for Italy is to give a strong signal", underlined Bailly, inviting our country to adopt "a substantial package" of measures to "restore the Italian economy and restore confidence". At the same time, Rehn's spokesman reiterated, Italy will have to "clarify its recovery plan" and the stability law it is preparing to approve, stating unequivocally "how it intends to implement the structural reforms".

It is in this light, recalled Bailly, that the questionnaire sent by the EU institutions to the Italian authorities is inserted, precisely to "have clarity and additional information on the letter" presented by Berlusconi. Meanwhile, monitoring will continue as long as necessary.

“We have not set a date for the end of the mission,” Bailly explained. "But the mission will not stay in Rome permanently," he added. Meanwhile the technicians are at work, but it is still too early to know when we will be able to have a first report on the Italian situation. "We still don't know when we will present our report", admitted Rehn's spokesman. For now, he concluded, "we await the developments of legislative activity in Italy, we are waiting these 48 hours" for the stability law.
