EU, Monti: "Invest in the single market or risk disintegration"

Europe needs to step up its efforts to achieve a real fulfillment of the single market, which otherwise seriously risks ending up disintegrated. Words, and music, are of the Prime Minister Mario Monti, who spoke via videoconference at the opening session of the "Single Market Conference", a conference held in Brussels and sponsored by the European Commission.
For Monti the primary need, to keep the single market alive, is that of a serious investment of political capital on the part of the whole European Union: "We must accept the uncomfortable truth that the single market is subject to the risk of being overwhelmed, including that of a return to the past until its disintegration", but to continue on this path, according to the president of the advise, "it is the best way to facilitate the absorption of macroeconomic imbalances in the Eurozone".
For Monti, however, it is crucial to work on governance mechanisms, moving towards a "greater integration of the financial market, creating a single supervisory mechanism, supported over time by harmonized rules on bank deposit guarantees and by the end of the banking system crisis”.
