EU-Greece, VAT and property tax increases in the list of reforms

In the list of commitments presented by the Tsipras government in Brussels, the maintenance of the property tax and the increase in VAT in certain areas of the country stand out – however, the agreement seems to be still far away.

EU-Greece, VAT and property tax increases in the list of reforms

Increase in VAT in tourist islands, maintenance of property tax, fight against tax evasion and privatizations. These would be, according to rumors, the main points of the commitment list presented by Athens to Brussels to obtain new lines of financing.

Destined to make noise, at home, it will be above all the maintenance of Enfia (equivalent to the IMU in Italy), which Tsipras had promised to replace with a tax only on large real estate assets during the electoral campaign. L'VAT increase, on the other hand, should not touch food and should only involve the islands.

Another setback by the government is related to privatizations, such as the (partial) one of the port of Piraeus. To complete the list, then, there would be the squeeze on black market in fuels and on the transfer of money abroadas well as freezing early retirement and the consolidation of pension funds.

According to a spokesman for the EU Commission, "the dialogue is proceeding constructively", but the definition of an agreement still seems to be far away: "Before Easter there will be a telephone meeting of the Euro Working Group which will decide the next steps".

The opinion of the spokesman of the German Finance Minister, Martin Jaeger, is more controversial: “We are waiting” for a list of reform proposals that “are worth discussing. The ball remains in Greek hand. We hope that a list will be presented as soon as possible."
