EU, Barroso: "Great Britain has proposed unacceptable conditions"

"Britain presented unacceptable terms and we had no choice but to proceed with a 26-party deal." As the president of the EU Commission Jose Manuel Barroso commented on the outcome of the Brussels accord which saw Britain withdraw from the new treaty.

“The United Kingdom – explained Barroso – to give its consent to the agreement on the fiscal pact he asked for a specific protocol on financial services which, as presented, jeopardized the integrity of the single market. This made compromise impossible."

Barroso also said that summit agreement 'not good enough', because the problem of the Euro zone "is not only one of public finances but also financial, therefore it is necessary to relaunch growth and employment".

He echoes the President of the Commission the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, who speaking at the Strasbourg plenary said that the eurozone will have to go "a long road to restore confidence", a road that will be "longer than one might have expected". “It will take time to correct the mistakes made in Maastricht”Van Rompuy concluded
