Tourism, Federalberghi: in August attendances drop for the first time in history (-1,1%)

A summer to forget that of Italian hoteliers. For the first time in the history of Italian tourism, hotel attendance dropped in August. The result for July was also negative.

The data comes from the Federlaberghi surveys: “July – underlines the president Bernabò Bocca – showed an overall decline in hotel stays of 5%, characterized by -8,9% of Italians and +0,2% of foreigners. August, for the first time in history, recorded a -1,1% overall presence, made up of -3% Italians and +2,1% foreigners". The July-August two-month period therefore recorded a -6% of Italians and a +1,1% of foreigners.

In the light of these data, "the first eight months of 2012 (compared to the same period of 2011) lead to a 2,6% loss of presences - adds Bocca -, with Italians at -5,6% and foreigners at a +1,2%. The drop in turnover can be estimated at around 10%, due to prices that have been firm for 3 years now and shrewd tariff policies that are difficult to sustain for a long time. As for the data on workers, from January to August we lost 2,6% of employed people, with a detail of -2,8% on permanent contracts and -2,5% on fixed-term contracts".

Federalberghi asks the Government and Parliament to "put their hands on a complex project for the political, legislative and financial reorganization of the sector to allow the thousands of companies that work in tourism and for tourism every day to raise their heads and restore strength and vitality to the GDP for which we contribute almost 10%”.
