Trenitalia has concluded the procedure for awarding the construction of new trains for regional transport. The best offers, for the three planned lots, are from Alstom, Hitachi Rail Italy and Stadler.
The tender, for an amount - unprecedented in Italy - was worth around 4,5 billion euros. There were 11 companies that passed the prequalification phase and six that presented an offer, some of which even for several lots: Alstom, Bombardier, Caf, Hyundai, Hitachi Rail Italy and Stadler.
In the end, Alstom was awarded Lot 1 for 150 medium-capacity trains (minimum 200 seats) and Hitachi Rail was awarded Lot 2 for 300 high-capacity trains (minimum 450 seats). In the third lot, for the supply of diesel trains, Stadler came first in the ranking, "on whose offer Trenitalia reserves further assessments of convenience".
"The order will lead to a significant increase in quality for commuters - writes Trenitalia -, thanks to innovatively designed trains that will guarantee an improvement in safety standards, greater technical reliability, as well as increased comfort on board thanks also to the presence of multimedia supports for users, as well as the possibility of diversifying the internal fittings, according to the needs that the individual Regions will express, in line with the different mobility needs of the territory".
