The Rei takes off and does not cost like the basic income

According to the INPS statistical Observatory, the Inclusion Income is working and in just three months, together with SIA, it has reached 900 beneficiaries - Boeri provides new estimates on basic income: "35-38 billion are needed" - Gentiloni: " Don't dismantle the important things that have been done"

The Rei takes off and does not cost like the basic income

In the first three months of 2018, almost 900 people benefited from measures to combat poverty launched by the Government, most of which – 7 out of 10 – reside in Southern Italy.

This is the data contained inStatistical Observatory on Inclusion Income (Rei) presented today by INPS and the Ministry of Labour.

In detail: 110 families, or 316.693 people, had access to the Rei, receiving up to 485 euros per month, while another 47.868 people (119 families) were involved in Sia (Active Inclusion Support). By July, the Rei should reach 2,5 million citizens, 700 families.

Numbers representing a first record, but which correspond to half of the objective set by the Executive, which aims to gather 500 families by July, corresponding to 1,8 million people.

How do you explain the number one of the INPS, Tito Boeri, the measures to combat poverty – Sia, Rei, but also regional measures – “reached 251 families as of March 23 of this year, involving 870 people. This is cumulative data. We can say that in Italy there is a minimum income”.

“I make an appeal – continued Boeri – to those who have waved the banner of minimum income in recent weeks: we must set ourselves the priority objective of finding more resources for the Rei and I hope they do not want to question but go on with the work. With the Rei we have filled a 70-year gap compared to other countries. Today there is a minimum income, in its infancy but it already exists: it is still underfinanced but by July the audience will rise to 2,5 million people and 700.000 families”.
The reference is very clear: the fight against poverty was the central theme of the last electoral campaign and it is in particular thanks to promise to introduce a citizen's income that the 5 Star Movement has conquered the South, reaching Guinness percentages.
During the presentation of the Rei Observatory, Boeri not surprisingly focused on the grillini's proposal, providing new estimates on the necessary financial coverage. According to INPS, we need not 14.9 billion as indicated by ISTAT but many more, "between 35 and 38 billion euros”, “a very substantial figure”.

Returning to the measures currently in force to combat poverty (Sia and Rei), based on the data provided, the 73% of the households receiving the two "aid" is represented by a family with at least three members, while 11% is a family with only one member. Speaking only of the Inclusion income, 23% of the 110 recipient nuclei is made up of only one component, in most cases an over 55 unemployed person. The average monthly amounts for families are 297 euros for the Rei and 244 euros for the Sia (119 families).

The Premier was also present at today's event Paolo Gentiloni according to which “the Rei works, it's good news, an important stage. We must therefore continue, gradually strengthening it with new resources. But not throwing overboard the work that has been done. We have a universal enforcement tool that can be upgraded and strengthened.”

  1. An easy measure as always in Italy, without reform of the employment centers and without any control over who requests the Rei and works illegally!! We need a serious measure like the Citizenship Income presented in the Senate and not even discussed by the previous government!! Tight controls, fines, reform of employment centers and company training courses and internships to really be reintroduced into the world of work!!
