Terna will invest 105 million for the new electricity connection between Sicily and Calabria

Terna works on the construction of the "Bolano-Annunziata", the new one electrical connection submarine that will allow you to connect the Sicilia with the Calabria. The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has started the authorization procedure for the project, which will be able to bring benefits to the entire Italian electricity system. For the construction of the work, the company led by Stefano Donnarumma will invest 105 million euros.

In detail, “the infrastructure in alternating current at 380 kV, included by Terna in the ten-year development plan of the Italian transmission grid, will make it possible to increase the total electricity exchange capacity between the island and the mainland up to 2000 MW, for the benefit of the development of sources renewable expected in Southern Italy". According to a note from the group, it highlights how this project "will make it possible to improve the grid mesh and operating flexibility, making the electricity systems of Southern Italy and Sicily even safer".

The new “Bolano-Annunziata” submarine infrastructure

The work is made up of several interventions. The main one consists in the laying of an approximately 7,5 km long submarine electric cable which will join the electric substations of Bolano, in the province of Reggio Calabria, and of Annunziata, in the province of Messina. This power line will also be equipped with an in connection fiber octave for data transmission. In addition, the national electricity grid operator will implement two lines electrical underground: the first, about 3 km long, starts from the Sicilian landing and arrives at the Annunziata station; the second, about 500 meters long, winds its way from the Calabrian landing to the Bolano station. Lastly, the latter will undergo technical adaptation by Terna, with the creation of a new 380 kV section, installed inside a newly constructed building. The entire adaptation will take place in areas adjacent to the current plant and will involve the Municipalities of Reggio Calabria and Villa San Giovanni.

Currently Sicily and Calabria are connected by two power lines at 380 kV: the “Sorgente-Rizziconi” connection (between Scilla and Villafranca) which entered service in 2016 and the “Bolano-Paradiso” line, dating back to the 80s. For this second infrastructure, in the summer of 2022 Terna started the modernization works of the land section, which falls within the municipal area of Messina.
