Terna: electricity consumption falls in May (-2,9% on an annual basis)

According to data released by Terna in May, the electricity demand in Italy, equal to 24,9 billion kWh, recorded a decrease of 2,9% compared to May last year - 24,9 billion 2014% of the kWh required in May 47,1 is distributed in the North, 28,9% in the Center and 24,0% in the South.

In May 2014, electricity demand in Italy, equal to 24,9 billion kWh, decreased by 2,9% compared to May last year. The demand for electricity fell by 2,3% if adjusted for the calendar effect. Compared to the corresponding month of 2013, the same average monthly temperature was in fact recorded, but fewer working days (21 vs 22). 

Of the 24,9 billion kWh required in May 2014, 47,1% is distributed in the North, 28,9% in the Center and 24,0% in the South. At a territorial level, the change in demand of electricity in May was negative everywhere: -3,7% in the North, -2,6% in the Center and -1,4% in the South. 

In May 2014, 88,1% of the demand for electricity was met with domestic production and the remainder (11,9%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (22,2 billion kWh) fell by 3,2% compared to May 2013.

The sources of photovoltaic (+10,4%) and geothermal (+3,5%) production are growing. On the other hand, wind (-23,8%), water (-9,1%) and thermoelectric (-0,2%) sources were down. In quarterly terms, the seasonally adjusted change in electricity demand in May 2014 compared to the previous month was -1,2%.

The trend profile remains negative. In the first five months of 2014, the demand for electricity decreased by 3,4% compared to the values ​​of the corresponding period of 2013; with the same calendar, the value is -3,2%.
