Terna, electricity consumption down in 2016

In August, according to Terna data, the demand for electricity in Italy was 24,2 billion kWh, with a decrease of 3,6% compared to the same month of the previous year.

In August 2016, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, the demand for electricity in Italy was 24,2 billion kWh, with a decrease of 3,6% compared to the same month of the previous year.

In economic terms, the seasonally adjusted value of electricity demand in August 2016 recorded a new increase (+1,4%) compared to the previous month. As a result of this increase, which is added to that already recorded in the previous month also in last July, the profile of the trend moves towards an increasing trend.

Of the 24,2 billion kWh required in August 2016, 42,2% is distributed in the North, 30,9% in the Center and 26,9% in the South. At the territorial level, the trend variation of August 2016 was down everywhere: -2,0% in the North, -4,3% in the Centre, -5,8% in the South.

As regards peak power, in August 2016 the peak of 48.811 MW was reached at 11am on the 31st, with a drop of 0,6% compared to the peak in August 2015.

In August 2016, 91,1% of the demand for electricity was met with domestic production and the remainder (8,9%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (22,2 billion kWh) was down by 2,6% compared to August 2015. Sources of geothermal production increased (+1,2%), water (+5,9% ) and wind power (+62,6%). The thermal source decreased (-8,6%), the photovoltaic one was substantially in line (-0,6%).

Demand in the first eight months of 2016 decreased by 3,4% compared to the corresponding period of 2015. With the same calendar, the result is -3,7%.
