Electricity consumption rising in February 2024, compared to the same month of the previous year. The data certifies this triad, according to which, last month the electricity demand was equal to 25,3 billion kWh (+1,6%).
Terna: electricity consumption increasing in February
2024 is a leap year and February had one more working day (21 instead of 20) and an average monthly temperature 2,6 degrees higher than the same month in 2023. The electricity demand data, seasonally adjusted and corrected by the opposing effects of calendar and temperature , is therefore essentially stable (-0,3%). At a territorial level, the trend change in February was positive everywhere: +2% in the North, +1,3% in the Center and +0,7% in the South and Islands.
Broadening the horizon ai first two months of the year, the national requirement recorded a growth of 1,8% compared to the corresponding period of 2023 (+0,5% the adjusted value).
The IMCEI index developed by Terna, which examines the industrial consumption of energy-intensive businesses, recorded growth of 3,5% compared to February 2023. The index figure, seasonally adjusted and corrected by the calendar effect, is stable (+0,2%). In detail, the sectors of transport, paper, chemicals, non-ferrous metals, food and steel were positive; decreasing in cement, lime and gypsum, ceramics and glass and mechanics.
In economic terms, the value of the electricity demand seasonally adjusted and corrected by calendar and temperature effects is almost stationary compared to January 2024 (-0,3%). Slightly positive sign for the IMCEI index, +0,3%.
Terna: national production meets 75,8% of demand, renewables 32,7%
Returning to Terna's monthly balance sheet, in February 2024 the demand for Italian electricity was satisfied for 75,8% from national production and for the remainder (24,2%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries.
Net national production was equal to 19,3 billion kWh. The renewables they covered 32,7% of electricity demand (it was 26,8% in February 2023). Increasing the water source +70,4%, wind +26,4% and geothermal +4,3%. The thermal source is decreasing as a direct consequence of the growth of renewables and imports: -17,5% compared to February 2023. In detail, the collapse of coal production can be observed: -75% compared to the same period last year. The photovoltaic source is almost stable (-0,4%).
In 2024 renewable capacity in operation it increased by 1.330 MW, a value 561 MW higher (+73%) compared to the same period of the previous year.
