Telecom Italia Sparkle: the submarine cable linking Europe to Asia passes through Sicily

The link between Asia and Europe will be Sicily. Telecom Italia Sparkle announced that the international submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE 5, has reached Catania, connecting to the Landing Station. The aim is to connect Europe to Asia right through the island of Italy which will thus become the main hub of the Mediterranean.

The cable will become operational by the end of the year and will be able to count on a capacity of 24 Terabits per second on three pairs of fiber lines for a total of 20.000 km.

SEA-ME-WE 5 will provide low latency connectivity across 17 countries – Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, France and Italy – enhancing existing routes while allowing diversification of the high traffic between Europe and Asia.

Sparkle's SEA-ME-WE 5 connectivity solutions in Sicily will be made available through its Next Generation Data Center at the Sicily Hub in Palermo.
