Today, Monday 23 May, is the 24th anniversary of the Capaci massacre, the attack in which Cosa Nostra killed the judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and the agents of his escort. "Palermo calls and Italy answers" is the title chosen for all the ceremonies that today will remember what happened.
The "Giovanni and Francesca Falcone" Foundation, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, has set up demonstrations in Palermo and in eight other Italian cities: Milan, Gattatico (Reggio Emilia), Florence, Naples, Rome, Pescara, Bari, Barile ( Power).
Falcone was assassinated on May 23, 1992, while returning from Rome to Palermo after landing at 16:45 at Punta Raisi airport. The judge, his wife and the judicial chauffeur Giuseppe Costanza were in a Croma Bianca, while Vito Schifani, Antonio Montinaro and Rocco Dicillo were traveling in a brown car. In the third blue car were Paolo Capuzza, Gaspare Cervello and Angelo Corbo.
Giovanni Brusca operated the remote control which caused the explosion of 1000 kg of TNT placed inside drums in a drainage tunnel under the highway. Only the occupants of the third car were miraculously saved together with about twenty people who, at the time of the attack, were passing through the scene of the massacre in their own cars. At 19:05, one hour and seven minutes after the attack, Giovanni Falcone died after some desperate attempts at resuscitation.
In the Bunker Hall of the Ucciardone prison will be present, among the authorities, the Minister of Education, University and Research Stefania Giannini, the president of the "Giovanni and Francesca Falcone" Foundation Maria Falcone, the president of the Senate Pietro Grasso, the Justice Minister Andrea Orlando, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano, Undersecretary of Education Davide Faraone, President of the Anti-Mafia Commission Rosy Bindi, National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Franco Roberti. There will be over 800 students in the classroom.
