Sotheby's to auction works by Picasso and Andy Warhol in New York

The auction also includes some of the most significant works by the American printmaker and designer, Blanche Lazzell. The Fatio House is one of the best examples of both the particular technique used by the artist and his great knowledge of the printing technique. Estimated at $150/200,000, the print in question is particularly valuable: it is one of the last two existing specimens

Sotheby's presents the vast offer of the New York Important Prints & Multiples auction. The proposed works come largely from private collections: the auction features the vast collection of Catherine Woodard and Nelson Blitz, Jr., as well as a fantastic group of works by Edvard Munch, and the Marina Picasso Collection, which includes over 80 prints made by his grandfather Pablo Picasso. Over 400, the proposed lots that touch a time span that goes from the XNUMXth century to the present day.

Built over more than 50 years, The Catherine Woodard and Nelson Blitz, Jr. Collection features a broad selection of artwork created between the late XNUMXs and early XNUMXs. The selection proposed by Sotheby's this October boasts works by four masters: Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Ludwig Kirchner and Jasper Johns.

Among the highlights of the collection, an iconic image of Edvard Munch, Young Woman on the Beach. The Lonely One (SCH. 42; W. 49) (estimate $3/4 million). Part of a series of 12 prints - many of which are kept in public institutions - the very high quality of this version and the excellent conservation conditions underline the enigma of the woman swallowed up by the vast and disturbing surrounding landscape. The work best exemplifies the artist's high ability to render feelings such as loneliness and anguish.

Following the success of Sotheby's May 2017 Picasso Man & Beast: Works from the Collection of Marina – in which all 111 lots sold and significantly exceeded pre-auction estimates – 81 prints from the Collection of Marina Picasso, granddaughter of Pablo Picasso, will be auctioned on October 23rd. Among the proposed works, we mention Sabartés avec deux femmes: eight states (Ba. 1060) (est. $40/60,000).

Considered a post-war icon, the opera Green is one of the greatest examples of Richard Diebenkorn; the monumental dimensions, the balanced composition, the abstract lines and the bright colors are factors that lead to define the work as one of the largest and most famous post-war prints (est. $400/600,000). Anatomy: 18 Prints by Jean-Michel Basquiat, the first collection of prints by the artist, is another milestone featured in the auction. Rendered in white on a black background, the various body parts and writings, not just reminiscent of x-rays, demonstrate the artist's keen interest in human anatomy. Purchased directly from the artist by the current owner, the complete set of 18 works has a pre-auction estimate of $300/500,000.

Also up for auction are Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup I (F. & S. II. 44-53), estimated at $500/700,000. In excellent condition, the group of 10 specimens refers to one of the recurring motifs of Warhol's pop poetry: Campbell's soup cans. Representative of the artist's vision towards modernity, and emblematic symbols of American consumerism, these icons have resisted the passage of time while maintaining their unaltered charm. Important Prints & Multiples features many works by Andy Warhol, such as the very famous Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) (Feldman & Schellmann II.31), estimated at $120/180,000, from a private collection in Maryland.
