Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, Eni and Fincantieri, confirming their common commitment to the transition path towards decarbonisation and environmental sustainability, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of joint projects in the circular economy, aimed at identify and implement technological solutions for to deal synergistically with the phenomenon of marine litter, which compromises the marine and coastal ecosystem mainly due to floating plastic waste and microplastics. The agreement was signed with the aim of studying and developing technologies for the collection of waste dispersed at sea and along the coast and using it to generate products for mobility and industrial applications.
Within the same Protocol, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Eni, after the agreements signed between the two parties last August, agreed on the development of joint projects for the valorisation of urban waste, with particular reference to non-recyclable plastic waste (Plasmix) and secondary solid fuel (CSS), a product of undifferentiated collection, to be transformed into products for sustainable mobility and industry, such as hydrogen and methanol.
The signing of the Protocol is part of the broader commitment of CDP, Eni and Fincantieri to support the energy transition to achieve the targets set for 2030 from the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, within the context of the energy strategy of the European Union.
In particular, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti will contribute to promote initiatives focused on the creation of new business models, also contributing its economic-financial skills, its relationships with the institutions and its knowledge of the territory, in order to identify suitable tools and methods of support for the initiatives; Eni will contribute industrial and technical skills aimed at the study and development of technology industrialization initiatives waste-to-chemical to enhance the material from Plasmix and CSS. Fincantieri, for the agreement relating to the marine litterwill contribute its skills to make the choice of naval vessels, define their configuration, as well as study the logistical implications in order to allow the collection, selection and treatment of waste at sea, in particular of plastic derivation, in addition to the disposal of the products resulting from the aforementioned treatment and the disposal of those that cannot be treated.
CDP, Eni and Fincantieri also converge on the need to support the search for technological solutions also an information and awareness activity, aimed at spreading a culture of environmental sustainability. The Protocol may be the subject of subsequent binding agreements that the parties will define in compliance with the applicable legislative and regulatory profiles, including those relating to transactions between related parties.
