Snam: subsidiary Snam4Environment acquires 5 plants for the production of biomethane

Snam4Environment, group company Snam active in the sector biomethane and the circular economy, through its subsidiary IES Biogas, acquired for a total of 30 million euros five agricultural biogas plants with 1MWe power in Veneto and Friuli Venezia-Giulia. The five plants are located in the provinces of Udine, Pordenone, Venice and Padua.

Biomethane: when fully operational, 22 million Sm3 per year

The five agricultural biogas plants acquired will be converted to biomethane, reaching the production capacity of approx. 500 Sm3/h each. According to the company's forecasts, thanks to the valorisation of livestock manure, agricultural waste and second-harvest crops, the plants will produce more than 22 million Sm3 of biomethane per year.

Three of the five plants will be connected to the national gas network by direct input of bioCNG (compressed natural gas), while the other two will be equipped with a liquefaction plant for the production of bioLNG (liquid natural gas) intended to feed the fleets of heavy vehicles for the distribution of goods.

“The operation follows the acquisition on 4 October by IES Biogas of four biogas plants for a total of approximately 4 MWe in Ostellato, in the countryside of Ferrara, for the conversion to biomethane and the introduction into the grid of approx. 11 million Sm3 per year of biomethane starting from approx. 160.000 tons of effluents from farms, agricultural waste and agri-food by-products from the sugar chain", underlines Snam in a note, which underlines: "if today there are in Italy 35 agricultural plants for an estimated value in 2023 of 773 million Sm3 of advanced withdrawable biomethane, by investing the 1,7 billion euros allocated by the new provisions, it will be possible to produce 8 billion cubic meters of biomethane a year in 2030, equal to approximately 30% of the Government's target of replacement supplies of gas imported from Russia.
