Cigarettes, from 15 February 2023 the increases take place: here's how much and which brands

Bad news for smokers: increase the prices of cigarettes. Starting Wednesday 15 February 2023 some packages will cost as much as 20 cents more. This is nothing new, the increases in cigarettes have been talked about abundantly for months, when the Budget law was still being outlined (article 1, paragraph 122). Now there is the official date: after two years of taxation stops, cigarettes will increase from today, but not all. The announcement comes directly from the Monopolies and Customs Agency, together with the table with the final price of the cigarette packets. In detail, what increases is the fixed amount per unit of product. However, the increase in prices does not stop there, but will continue to rise until 2025.

Which cigarettes will increase? And by how much?

The question that many smokers are asking themselves is the same: how much will a pack cost? As can be seen from list published in the Adm, a package of Chesterfield o Philip Morris, for example, will cost 20 cents more. The rise will also affect other brands known as Winston, Camel and some types of Marlboro.

Cigarettes, the increases expected by 2025

To further reduce cigarette consumption, further increases are planned over the next few years. As anticipated, the increase concerns the fixed amount per unit of product: from 1 January 2023 it reached 28 euros per thousand cigarettes, in 2024 it will reach 28,20 euros and in 2025 to 28,70 euros. Substantially, therefore, as regards packets of cigarettes, after tomorrow's increase, a further increase in the cost of between 10 and 15 cents is expected in the next three years.

However, the intervention of the Budget law does not only concern cigarettes but also i cigars, snuff, from I chew, from kite and inhalation. And with a wider leeway, however, considering that excise duties on these products are around 30-35%, against 75% for cigarettes.

Cigarette hikes aren't the latest squeeze on smokers. The Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci wants to give a further turn of the screw and also to those who smoke the electronic cigarette. The target? A “tobacco-free” generation.
