Education as a force to unite peoples, nations and cultures in the search for peace and a sustainable future. This is what the United World Colleges (Uwc) will present during next week's Road Map which will arrive in the cities of Bari, Pisa, Milan and Rome.
The global movement that promotes education and the culture of peace will present the new competition notice for selections
for scholarships aimed at enrolling in the 17 Colleges of the United World.
The gauntlet is thrown down to all the boys who are in the third year of high school eager to have a two-year experience in one of the 17 academic realities of the UWC network present all over the world (from China to Swaziland, from the USA to the heart of Europe) attended by around 9000 peers from over 150 countries, and of these about 6% with refugee status (2013 figure).
It is a school model with a cutting-edge methodology and for this capacity for innovation and student involvement, the United World College of Duino obtained recognition among the Italian schools that have established themselves internationally in September 2017 for education and innovation. The Changemaker School award was given by Ashoka, the most
large international network of social entrepreneurs.
In Milan, the presentation of the initiative will be moderated by Italian-Indian journalist Cristina Piotti. The rector of the college of Duino Michael Price, school leaders together with students, former students and parents will be present, ready to talk about their experiences and answer questions from the public.
Admission to the boarding schools takes place exclusively on merit based on the potential of each young candidate. Thanks to a preparation that combines the academic part with involvement in voluntary services, creative activities and sports, students obtain the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) and have the opportunity to continue their studies even in the most prestigious universities around the world.
The UWC Movement offers an educational program that inspires young people to take action and change, developing partnerships that can benefit students and communities. To do this, it receives support from governments, foundations, philanthropists, companies, alumni and parents.
Funds from these donors cover the UWC scholarship system. The deadline for submitting applications is 6 November 2017. In the last edition, 51 Italian youngsters were selected, over 40 of whom obtained scholarships.
In Italy there is the United World College of the Adriatic ONLUS of Duino (Trieste), the first to arise in a non-English-speaking country, where almost 200 young people from more than 80 countries come every year. In over 50 years of activity, the UWC Movement has created a network of 55.000 alumni.
