Saipem accelerates transition: new contracts in Italy and Algeria for biorefining and fertilizers

Saipem was awarded a new contract from Enilive, the Eni company dedicated to sustainable fuels, for theexpansion of the biorefinery of Porto Marghera, at the gates of Venice. The value of the agreement, which concerns engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities, is about 155 million euro and is part of the broader collaboration agreement between the two companies recently renewed.

The intervention will allow for increase production capacity of the plant from 400 to 600 thousand tons per year, in view of the start of the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) starting from 2027. Today's contract represents the continuation of the preliminary activities already started in recent months by Saipem, which was responsible for the detailed design and supply of critical equipment.

With this new assignment, the company strengthens its role in the energy transition and consolidates its presence in the biorefining supply chain, an increasingly central segment of the European energy strategy.

Strategic project in Algeria with Sonatrach

A few days ago, however, Saipem has awarded by Sonatrach, Algerian state-owned group and the largest oil company in Africa, a Front End Engineering Design Contract (Feed) within the framework of the “Phosphate Integrated” project, which aims to achieve the first Algerian industrial complex dedicated to'phosphate mining and fertilizer production.

The contract is part of a competitive “dual feed” process, in which two operators, including Saipem, will develop alternative technical and design solutions: at the end, Sonatrach will select the most efficient one and will directly entrust its execution through an EPC contract. The design work entrusted to Saipem includes the Bled El Hadba Mining Infrastructure, process units and auxiliary systems in the Oued Keberit area, the modernization of the port of Annaba and the construction of new railway connections.

Once operational, the project will be able to extract up to 10 million tons of phosphates per year and produce 6 million tons of fertilizers, contributing to the diversification of the Algerian economy and the positioning of the country among the main players in the sector at a global level.

Saipem boasts a long history of collaboration with Algeria, Where has been operating steadily since 1968 and has contributed to the development of important infrastructures for the hydrocarbon industry, electrical plants and drilling activities. The new assignment in the fertilizer sector marks the beginning of a different phase, which broadens the company's scope of action in a market that has always been considered strategic. At the same time, it strengthens Saipem's profile as a player capable of managing complex integrated projects, thanks to consolidated know-how both in terms of technology and in terms of large-scale infrastructure works.
