Today at a quarter past midnight a fire broke out in terminal 3 of the Leonardo da Vinci international airport, in Fiumicino (Rome). It took the firefighters three hours to put out the flames. The column of smoke is still visible from a few kilometers away.
The Roman airport was closed entirely until 14 pm. The motorways to the airport and the railway connections were also closed.
Great inconvenience to traffic in the whole area surrounding the airport, with kilometers of cars queuing between Ostia and Fiumicino.
The causes of the fire are still unknown. Some sources say that the flames would have started from a luggage storage, according to others the origin would have been a restaurant area.
According to the Carabinieri, three people were slightly intoxicated, but at the moment it seems that no one is injured. The air in the area where the fire spread is still unbreathable and rescuers are still working in difficult conditions.
Only thirteen incoming non-Schengen flights were cleared to land.
