The electronic veterinary prescription becomes mandatory. The new rules take effect today, April 16. The electronic prescription will definitively replace the paper format. This was announced by the Minister of Health, Giulia Grillo, according to whom the novelty represents "a very important element in the process of digital innovation which concerns Italian health, specifically animal health, but which also has important repercussions on human health".

Italy will be the first country in the European Union to use the electronic veterinary prescription, an “innovative system in the field of animal health”, Grillo said, “and it will be a guarantee for everyone because it will provide the consumption of drugs on farms and precise data on the consumption of antibiotics as well”.

For the minister, the new rules also represent “a fundamental step in the strategy to fight antibiotic resistance which will be one of the next public health challenges.”

Ma How does the new electronic veterinary prescription work? Identification will take place via a prescription number and a four-digit pin code which will be generated by the system when issued by the veterinary surgeon.

To produce the recipe, the latter will have to use the application that can be downloaded on all smartphones or online portals Vetinfo e veterinary e-prescription.

Pet owners they have to buy a medicine prescribed by the vet trustworthy, all they have to do is go to the pharmacy and provide the prescription number and the pin or, alternatively, their tax code and the four-digit pin of the prescription. The pharmacist will acquire the digital prescription and deliver the drug to the customer.
