Renzi chooses Calenda to represent Italy in Brussels

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has chosen Carlo Calenda, Deputy Minister for Development, to represent Italy in Brussels. Calenda replaces Ambassador Stefano Sannino, much appreciated in community circles, who should be destined to represent Italy in Madrid. Calenda's appointment will be formalized today by the cabinet.

The change should also be read as Palazzo Chigi's move to restore less tense relations with the European Commission, after the growing tensions of recent months and, in particular, of the last few days. Calenda is 43 years old, has a law degree, was assistant to Luca di Montezemolo when he was president of Confindustria. He arrived at the Ministry of Development with the Letta government and remained there with the Renzi government. He followed all the international dossiers and in particular the negotiations with the United States for the Ttpi, the trade agreement which is still under negotiation. The last mission for the development of Made in Italy was a few days ago in New York. His departure from the ministry leaves open a new position in addition to the one vacated by Deputy Minister Claudio De Vincenti, who became undersecretary at Palazzo Chigi since last April
