Renzi to the EU Council: "More flexibility obtained in exchange for reforms". Ok Juncker to the Commission

“If an EU country is serious about structural reforms, it now has the right to have greater flexibility. For us, this is the most important political result we have achieved. We won a battle of method and substance, now it's time to do things in Italy". Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said so at the end of the EU Council meeting.

“The type of flexibility that will be obtained will depend on the type of reforms that will be presented – he added -. Anyone in Italy who thinks that we are not serious about the reforms should know that this is not the case and it cannot be this way: there is great determination on the part of the government to proceed in the correct direction”.

As for the appointments, “I voted on behalf of Italy for Jean Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission – continued the Premier – because there was a document: I would not have done it without a document, without a political agreement. The discussion was opened by negative interventions by David Cameron and his Hungarian colleague, which however were not sufficient to prevent the Council from mentioning Juncker's name”.

As far as our country is concerned, the Premier assured that "Enrico Letta's name has never been mentioned for the presidency of the European Council, neither officially nor pour parler, because it is difficult to think that two out of three presidencies in Europe may be due in Italy”, given the presence of Mario Draghi at the top of the European Central Bank.

The Prime Minister did not however exclude that Federica Mogherini could obtain the position of High Representative of EU foreign policy.
