Renzi, goodbye to Pd: divorce on the way but support for Conte 2

The shift to the left of the Democratic Party and the imminent return of Bersani and D'Alema push Matteo Renzi to speed up the divorce from the Nazarene and to form a new autonomous political group in the center, which however will support the Conte 2 government of which it will become the tip of the balance

Renzi, goodbye to Pd: divorce on the way but support for Conte 2

Unless twists and turns, the former prime minister Matteo Renzi will announce on Tuesday, in Bruno Vespa's "Porta a porta" broadcast, his exit from the Democratic Party. Renzi should bring around thirty parliamentarians (20 to the Chamber and 10 to the Senate) with him with the aim of forming an autonomous center group.

What is the cause of the acceleration of the divorce from the Democratic Party? The leftward shift of the party led by Nicola Zingaretti which is preparing to welcome Leu's splinters, from Pierluigi Bersani to Massimo D'Alema and Roberto Speranza, into the Democratic Party.

The incompatibility of political and strategic vision with Leu has induced Renzi to forge ahead in order to use the next meeting of the Leopolda in mid-October not as an occasion to announce the divorce but as one to concretely start the activity of the new political formation.

Despite the political dissent with Pd and Leu, Renzi - who communicated his intentions to the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte - assured his convinced political support for the new government, having been the promoter of the political change that led to the formation of the new Executive. However, it is evident that now, being able to play on his own and given the numbers of the majority in Parliament, Renzi assumes the golden share of the government and can act as the needle in the balance by increasing his bargaining power in the coalition.

IRenzi's new group, which should be called "L'Italia del Si" with reference to the battle conducted in the autumn of 2016 on the constitutional referendum, it will therefore remain in the Government and will have the Minister of Agriculture, Teresa Bellanova, as its head of delegation.

Renzi's former loyalists will not take part in the split, namely the group leaders Delrio and Marcucci (who also remains very Renzi-like) and the leaders of the reformist Base, Lotti and Guerini. Renzi plans to gather, in addition to a part of the parliamentarians and militants of the Democratic Party, also defectors from the center-right in disagreement with the alliance of Forza Italia with Salvini's League.

The president of the new Renzian political formation should be the former minister Maria Elena Boschi. The coordinator will most likely be Ettore Rosato.
