Prosecco Doc enters Origin to defend itself against bad copies

Il Consortium for the protection of the Prosecco Doc become part of ORIGIN world coalition of Consortia for the protection of Geographical Indications based in Geneva.

The collaboration between the Prosecco Doc Consortium and ORIGIN has three main goals: fight against international protection issues, intensification of protection in bilateral agreements, protection activities against imitative, usurpative and harmful trademarks of the Denomination.

Stephen Zanette, President of the Consortium for the protection of DOC Prosecco comments: “We are excited to expand our international relations by working with this organization which has been operating locally and internationally since 2003 with campaigns aimed at decision makers, the media and the general public, helping to preserve the quality and tradition of the wines from a specific area, while at the same time promoting the development of the production sector and intensifying the protection and control activity already practiced by our Consortium”.

The objective of the Swiss consortium is to intensify the effectiveness of protection actions by exploiting an established network of relationships, projects, experiences in the control of Indications of Origin. Over the years, in fact, the number of GI consortia from different countries and sectors that decide to join together to ensure their products international protection is growing. Currently ORIGIN has 400 producer organizations and institutions from 40 different countries.

The denomination of Prosecco Doc, with over 300 million bottles produced in 2014 and a constantly increasing demand, is a particularly tempting morsel for those who trade fake Made in Italy products. For this reason, the entry of DOC Prosecco into ORIGIN represents an important step in the path of growth at an international level and an opportunity for greater protection of the brand.

“GIs – continues Zanette – play a fundamental role in Italian viticulture since they are a direct expression of the territory and culture from which they come. Certification has acquired increasing importance in global trade and their protection is an important tool for sustainable development for local producers. It coincides with the defense of our cultural traditions and employment, especially in rural areas."
