Egadi-Enea project: less plastic, more tourists

Sustainable tourism: carried out in Favignana by Enea a project which, thanks to the construction of a compostable plant and a "water house", has made it possible to reduce 5 tons of plastic waste and increase the number of travelers on the island by 7%. The model presented can also be replicated in other islands

Egadi-Enea project: less plastic, more tourists

Is called Egadi project, it was created by Enea and has recently won the Smau 2015 award for Smart communities. Less pollution and more tourists (+7%), this is the key to success experienced on Favignana and which can be replicated elsewhere. Specifically, the Project has made it possible to create a composting plant for the transformation of the organic fraction of waste from separate collection into fertilizer for the soil; the treatment and reuse of waste water and the installation of a 'water house', powered by photovoltaic panels, to reduce the use of plastic bottles. Over 14 liters of water were dispensed in 200 months avoid over 5 tons of plastic waste, the equivalent weight of almost 140 1,5-litre bottles.

ENEA has also patented a procedure (which won the Green Coast Award 2013) to ensure that beached residues of Posidonia oceanica, are not disposed of as waste but replanted on the seabed: Posidonia forests have thus grown, very important for the marine ecosystem because they are able to absorb large quantities of CO2 and are an ideal habitat for the reproduction of numerous fish species.

A was also created environmental quality label and there are already 60 local businesses that have already obtained certification for having complied with the sustainability criteria indicated for each tourist category (restaurants, bars, bathing centers, hotels, rental businesses, mooring, fishing tourism, diving centers and passenger transport ). And in one year, visitors have increased by 7%.

The tourism sector represents, in economic terms, about 10,3% of the national GDP, with an employment equal to about 2,7 million workers equal to about 11,7% of the total national employment. Globally, Italy is the fifth country for international arrivals after France, the United States, Spain and China, but our share worldwide has dropped from 5,6% in 1990 to 4,1% in 2010, with an estimated of a further decrease to 3,7% in 2020, in the absence of strategic and structural interventions for a serious recovery. While it must be recognized that this trend is common to many European countries to the advantage of emerging countries and new tourist destinations - observes Enea - the fact remains that the potential of our country's tourist offer remains very high by virtue of the environmental, naturalistic, landscape, cultural , cheap.
