Motor liability policies: to counter scam sites, IVASS is studying a "white list" of authorized intermediaries

To counter the phenomenon of Online liability scams, the Insurance Supervisory Institute will create a "white list" with all internet sites authorized to sell this type of policy. The project was announced by Riccardo Cesari, director of IVASS who spoke on Wednesday at the congress of the union of insurance agents (ANAPA).

The Institute "is working on a new project to counter the phenomenon at its origin: the publication of a sort of white list of the websites of regular intermediaries - explained Cesari - L'Information would facilitate prior verification, by the providers and search engines, but also by the consumers themselves, of the effective existence and legitimacy of the insurance interlocutors with whom they are about to undertake commercial or consumer relations, thus ensuring an effective preventive anti-fraud action”.

Last year Ivass reported 219 irregular websites, "of which today 90% are offline", said the director of the Supervisory Institute.

Illegal sites operate above all in the motor liability sector and sureties in favor of public bodies. "The so-called ghostbroking – added Cesari – is extremely harmful not only for consumers, who, in addition to the economic damage, find themselves exposed to stops and administrative sanctions for irregular traffic, but also for sector operators (intermediaries and companies), who are also victims to an increasing extent of identity theft, with damage to image and reputation and an increase in the legal risks to which they are exposed”.
