Who knows if Marco Minniti will really decide to run for the secretariat of the Democratic Party to contend for leadership with Nicola Zingaretti or not, but what is certain is that in the next few days the former Minister of the Interior and the anti-Salvini of the left he will be able to fully clarify his thoughts with the launch of a new book, which will be presented in the Chamber on November 6th. Its title "Security and freedom" is already a program and it would become even more so if it became the book of the candidate for the secretariat of the largest left-wing party
For the Democratic Party, which has not yet recovered from the electoral blow of March 4, it is time for writing. Minnie's book he is not the first and will not be the last in the Pd house. In recent days it was another former minister, Carlo Calenda, who presented his book, "Horizons wild", published by Feltrinelli, which is a commendable attempt to orient yourself in an Italy that has become "fragile and confused".
But other big guns are arriving at the bookstore from the Pd house. Despite the confidentiality that still surrounds their work, both the former premier Paolo Gentiloni and the former minister of the economy, Pier Carlo Padoan, are writing and soon they too will arrive in bookstores. From what little is known for now, perhaps Padoan's will be a book-interview. Already ready for bookstores is also the book of Marco Leonardi, Matteo Renzi's former economic adviser on labor problems, "The halved reforms", published by Egea.
And then there are the women. Two of the most brilliant PD MPs of the last legislature, Linda Lanzillotta and Irene Tinagli, are ready to debut in bookstores with texts that will focus on the difficulties of modernization in today's Italy and will focus on vital issues to relaunch the country but also on the unresolved problems of the left.
Better a book than a tweet. The rain of books that is arriving in the bookstores from inside the Democratic Party can be a golden opportunity to reflect on the mistakes made in the past years and decades but above all to look ahead, to outline a vision of society against the closed, xenophobic, racist and illiberal one supported by the populism and sovereignty of the League and the Five Stars, but also to outline a political project and a programmatic platform with which to face new challenges in such complicated and difficult times in Italy and throughout the world.
Finding a new cultural and political paradigm for those who have not given up on the idea of progress and freedom combined with justice is an enterprise that will make your wrists tremble. But books help. As long as there is someone - in the Democratic Party and outside - who reads them, meditates on them and treasures them. Writing is important but it is essential that there is someone who listens.
