A career that began in fashion
Graduated from the École Duperré and the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM)Émilie Hammen began her career as a fashion designer, working for various artistic directors of ready-to-wear and haute couture houses, including Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and Christian Dior. She also holds a degree in art history and completed a doctorate in fashion history in 2020 at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. By closely linking theory and practice, she has developed an original approach that contributes to the renewal of contemporary interpretations of fashion history. Through her publications, including "L'idea de la mode," published in 2023, and her curatorial work, she introduces new historiographical and methodological perspectives on the objects, narratives, and temporalities of clothing.
French-American citizen with international professional experience
She has participated in several educational and cultural initiatives, most recently on the occasion of the centenary of the Lesage embroidery atelier (2024), co-curating the exhibition presented at the Galerie du 19M, then in Japan (Tokyo, Mori Tower, 2025). Émilie Hammen also teaches fashion history and theory at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where since 2023 she has held the first research chair dedicated to the history of fashion and its heritage at a French university. Since 2014, she has also led courses in fashion history at the IFM, where she has notably led several research projects on fashion know-how with the support of Chanel and 19M. Émilie Hammen will capitalize on her dual expertise in the fields of fashion, science, and creativity. It will continue to showcase the museum's exceptional collection through an ambitious and balanced exhibition program, anchored in contemporary themes and highly appealing to Parisian, national, and international visitors.
