The European Council today gave the green light to the directive that provides the legal basis for creating a single market for electronic payments in the EU, updating a package of rules dating back to 2007.
The new rules also aim to increase security, taking into account the new realities that have emerged in recent years, such as those of specialist intermediaries who, by placing themselves between the buyer and the seller, also ensure a protection service in favor of both.
The approval of government representatives took place during a Council dedicated to agriculture and fisheries. Individual governments now have two years to transpose the rules set out in the directive at national level.
