Extra Virgin Olive Oil: shower of medals for Italy at Sol d'oro in Verona

Sixteen of the eighteen medals envisaged in the six categories in the competition went to Italian producers. In the lead Tuscany followed by Lazio and Sardinia. The 19th edition of the Sol d'Oro competition which took place in Verona and which saw the oil productions of the Mediterranean and South America compete together, given the impossibility of organizing the Southern Hemisphere edition, due to the pandemic, well 225 samples of extra virgin olive oilfrom seven countries, Chile, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia.

For the Italian producers it was an unprecedented success: they won sixteen of the eighteen medals foreseen in the six categories in the competition (Light fruity, Medium fruity, Intense fruity, Organic, Monovarietal, Absolute Beginners). A success equally distributed among the main producing regions: four to Tuscany, three to Lazio, two to Sardinia, Campania and Umbria, one to Puglia, Sicily and Calabria. The only foreign countries awarded were the Spain with a Sol d'Oro in the Light Fruity category and Slovenia with a Sol d'Oro in the Absolute Beginners category. The "Sol d'Oro Challenge 2021", which rewards the best overall performance, was awarded for the second consecutive year to Masoni Becciu, from Villacidro, Sardinia.

The preview tasting of the winning oils is scheduled during the Evoo Days, the forum for in-depth analysis of the olive oil supply chain (5-6 July 2021 at Veronafiere), reserved for the press and Forum participants. There awards ceremony with the delivery of the Sol d'Oro, d'Argento and Bronze awards, it will take place instead Sunday 17 October on the occasion of Sol&Agrifood Special edition (17-19 October 2021).

“This competition sanctioned the resumption, together with other events in the agro-food sector, of Veronafiere's activity after the end of the health emergency”, observes Gianni Bruno, director of the Wine & Food commercial area of Veronafiere. “Since the XNUMXs we have been committed to promoting quality extra virgin olive oil through Sol d'Oro and other important events, such as the Evoo Days, which aim to increase the culture of the sector with insights and networking opportunities. Furthermore, many marketing and promotional initiatives are planned in Italy and abroad, which will involve the winning oils of the competition”.

To distinguish this edition of Sol d'Oro also the period in which it was held. “This year we have further expanded the internationality of the jury, with professional tasters coming from Italy as well as from Spain, Jordan, Portugal, Slovenia, France and Greece”, explains Marino Giorgetti, head of the Sol d'Oro Panel since the its first edition. “Also to allow their arrival in Verona, it was decided to postpone the competition in June, at the end of the health emergency, compared to the traditional appointment in February. Thanks to advanced conservation methods, all this has not affected the quality of the oils present. I want to remind you that Sol d'Oro, in its modalities of blind tasting with individual tasting booths, confirms itself as an extremely selective competition”.
