19 million doses of bivalent vaccine are on the way. These are "updated" mRna vaccines, effective for both the original Wuhan strain and the Omicron 1 variant, developed by Pfizer and Moderna, approved by the Italian Medicines Agency last September 5 after the green light from the EMA . But who has to make the updated anti-Covid vaccines? And when? Here's what the circular from the Ministry of Health says.
Covid, who has to make the new updated vaccines?
The administration of the new vaccines is recommended "as a priority to those who are still waiting to receive the second booster dose", the so-called fourth dose, (also including health workers, operators and guests of residential facilities for the elderly and pregnant women), so over 60 e people with high frailty but also “to all subjects of the same age or over 12 years still waiting to receive the first booster dose”, or third dose, “regardless of the vaccine used to complete the primary cycle, with the timing already set for the same”. While those who have already received the fourth dose are not called to a new administration.
When will the new vaccines be available? And where?
Therefore, those who have received the AstraZeneca, Janssen, Pfizer-Biontech or Moderna vaccine will still be able to undergo the updated doses, currently produced only by Pfizer-Biontech and Moderna. As in the past, a new vaccination can be inoculated according to the timing established by the previous provisions, i.e. after an interval of at least 120 days from the last administration or from the positive swab in case you had contracted the virus. The vials are already expected by 10 September e from Monday 12 September begins booking with the new bivalent vaccines. But where? It will be possible to get vaccinated at the large hubs that are still open, but pharmacies and family doctor offices will be more involved. The Regions will organize the administrations locally together with the Palazzo Chigi task force led by General Tommaso Petroni.
