In 2017 46 thousand new businesses in Italy, the South drives the growth

From a study by Unioncamere – Among the Italian regions, Lazio is the one in which the most businesses have opened. Among the sectors, the growth is driven by tourism and business services.

In 2017 46 thousand new businesses in Italy, the South drives the growth

In 2017, the number of new businesses in Italy exceeded the number of businesses that closed their doors. Last year there were 46 thousand companies registered in the registers of the Chamber of Commerce, with a growth of 0.7% compared to 206.

Contributing the most to the excellent result of entrepreneurship is the Noon, to which we owe about 60% of the overall increase in the number of new businesses. This is a record figure in the history of the national balance.

From what can be learned from the study prepared by Unioncamere and InfoCamere on the birth rate and death rate of Italian companies in 2017, there are two phenomena that explain this result: on the one hand, the slowdown in the birth of new companies (almost 357 nationwide, the 1,8% less than in 2016), on the other a more consistent slowdown in closures (just over 311 thousand, the lowest figure in the last twelve years), down by -3,4% compared to the previous year.

All regions, except Piedmont (-965), Emilia-Romagna (-636) and Friuli Venezia Giulia (-431), all other regions closed 2017 with a positive population balance. The best region in this particular ranking was Lazio (10.648 more companies), followed by Campania (+9.472) and Sicily (+7.518).

With regard to the industrial sectors, in 2017 the positive trend was driven by tourism (+10.335), business services (+7.206) and scientific and technical professional activities (+5.494). Negative performance instead for manufacturing activities (-2.648), construction (-1.913) and agriculture (-447).

However, if we look at the performance of the sectors in the South, the picture is partly in contrast and above all shows a strong concentration of the surplus in tourism (always in the lead among the most chosen entrepreneurial vocations) and in agriculture (+2.810) . More than positive balances in the south also in trade (+1.970) and construction (+1.284).

“Data on business openings and closings during 2017 show that the Italians continue to
believe in doing business”, underlines the president of Unioncamere, Ivan Lo Bello. “And the South of our country is also showing signs of improvement. For this - added Lo Bello - it is necessary help entrepreneurs keep pace with changes which increasingly rapidly invest the world of the economy. 46 companies more than in 2016 are a sign that Italy is returning to the path of growth”.
