Napolitano: "Banks must increase lending"

Napolitano: "Banks must increase lending"

Banks must support the recovery increasing business loans. This is the appeal of the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, in a message for World Savings Day.

"The first and uncertain signs of recovery must lead to the strengthening of all actions to support the economy - underlines the Head of State -, in a general effort which cannot miss the contribution of the banking and financial system: starting from a adequate expansion of corporate finance, especially small and medium-sized ones, in a more solid framework of stability of the financial system and effective protection of savers".

Widening our gaze to the continental perspective, according to Napolitano "an essential contribution to the recovery of production can be offered by a marked progress in the process of completing the European economic and monetary union, of which the banking union constitutes a fundamental element".

In view of this objective, concluded the Chairman, "innovations and system adaptations are required which, however costly, contain the preconditions for greater competitiveness and great development potential for the banking system and the economy of the whole country".
