Museums and Exhibitions, all the rankings of 2014

In Italy, the “Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill” Archaeological Circuit wins hands down, which doubles the Pompeii Excavations in terms of number of visitors and income – The most visited art museum in the world remains the Louvre, while the most visited exhibition in Italy was "The girl with the Pearl Earring"

While awaiting the 2014 data which will be released in April, let's take a look at the 2013 results presented by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism relating to state institutions with paid admission.

There are no significant changes compared to 2012. Visitors to the excavations of Herculaneum and the renovated Egyptian Museum in Turin are growing. The Medici Chapels in Florence and the Royal Palace in Caserta lose ground.

The first seven positions remain unchanged. In first place remains, with great detachment from the others, the Colosseum. The Vatican Museums are obviously not present as they belong to another state: they would be in first place with around 6 million visitors in 2014 (5.459.000 in 2013). The difference in position with respect to the 2012 classification is squared in brackets.

THE TOP 10 ITALIAN MUSEUMS ACCORDING TO TRIPADVISOR USERS

As far as user perception is concerned, the ranking of the 10 most popular art attractions according to the reviews published by users of the TripAdvisor site can be used.

Winners were determined using an algorithm that took into consideration the quantity and quality of reviews for museums globally over the past 12 months, Travelers' Choice Attractions. In the Italian section of the 2014 Museums, Turin is the most loved city with the Venaria Reale, the Egyptian Museum, the National Cinema Museum and the Automobile Museum (the latter is not easy to define as an art museum, but this is how users consider it of TripAdvisor). Florence follows with three museums: the Accademia, the Uffizi and the Bargello. Rome is present with the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery. Followed by Venice, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (the only one of contemporary art) and Naples with the esoteric Cappella Sansevero.

1. Accademia Gallery, Florence

2. Borghese Gallery, Rome

3. Sansevero Chapel, Naples

4. Uffizi Gallery, Florence

5. Vatican Museums, Rome

TOP 10 ART MUSEUMS IN THE WORLD

The data was processed by the journal The art newspaper and in Italy since Journal of the Art and are related to 2013.

Four are in London, three in Paris, only one in Rome (Vatican Museums) and one each in Taipei and Washington. The Uffizi Gallery (Florence) is the first Italian museum in the world ranking and appears in 26th place with less than 2 million visitors. Followed by the Palazzo Ducale in Venice (42nd), the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence (46th), Castel Sant'Angelo (71st), Palazzo Pitti, Florence (85th), the Venaria Reale in Turin (94th) .

Note. English museums have free entry. The classification criteria are different from those followed by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. For example, the The “Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill” Archaeological Circuit which, even with 5,6 million visitors, would rank among the first places, does not enter the rankings (as do the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum) because they do not fall within the definition of “museum” used by The art newspaper.
