Measles cases quintupled since April 2016

This is what emerges from the new weekly bulletin edited by the Ministry of Health and the Higher Institute of Health (ISS), which updates the total number of cases that have occurred since the beginning of this year to 1.920: in the month of April alone there were 385, five times more than the 76 in April 2016.

There were 385 cases of measles registered in Italy in April 2017, i.e five times those that occurred in the same month of 2016, when there were just 76. This is what emerges from the new weekly bulletin edited by the Ministry of Health and the Higher Institute of Health (ISS), which updates the total number of cases that have occurred since the beginning of this year to 1.920. Of these a third with at least one complication.

From the sixth issue of the bulletin, created to monitor the ongoing measles epidemic in Italy, it appears that from 24 to 30 April 2017, 29 infections were registered, bringing a total of 385 cases in the month of April 2017 alone. 34% had at least one complication, such as diarrhea, pneumonia, otitis, hepatitis, respiratory failure, drop in platelets, more rarely encephalitis and seizures. 40% were hospitalized, 15% resorted to the emergency room. Almost all Regions have reported cases, but 92% come from Piedmont, Lazio, Lombardy, Tuscany, Abruzzo, Veneto and Sicily. Finally, there were 176 cases among health workers.
