The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, is being investigated by the Milan public prosecutor's office as a former CEO of the Expo in the "Piastra dei servizi" investigation. The hypothesized crime is of false material, which carries a sentence of one to six years, but the investigations require another six months to be completed. At the center of the investigation is the assignment of the most important contract of the Expo, worth 272 million euros, which was already the subject of investigations two years ago on the assumption that in order to speed up the work and arrive at the appointment in due time of the Expo, not all the necessary checks would have been carried out.
The news of Sala's entry in the register of suspects arrived like a bomb on Milan and on all national politics. Once again the center-left and the Democratic Party are in the eye of the storm with one of its most representative figures and the relationship between politics and the judiciary is sparking.
Mayor Sala's reaction was very harsh: "This time I won't let myself be crushed" by investigations that last a long time and which perhaps, as on a previous occasion, end in nothing. Therefore "despite not having the slightest idea of the investigative hypotheses, I have decided to suspend myself from the office of mayor" until everything is clarified.
Sala will formalize his decision today in the hands of the prefect of Milan but his anger transpires from the answer he gave to those who asked him if he trusted the judiciary: "I'm not saying that I don't trust him, but neither is the opposite".
