If you are over 25 and live in Tuscany, Sardinia, Abruzzo or Molise, you can apply to become the guardian of a minor who has arrived in Italy unaccompanied by adults. These regions do not have a regional guarantor for childhood and adolescence, therefore the national authority has stipulated memoranda of understanding with the juvenile courts and issued a notice. Requests must be sent by 30 September 2017 on this form to the address tutorvolontari@garanteinfanzia.org.
The responsibility to be assumed is great: it is necessary to look after the interests of the minor in every area, listen to his needs, cultivate his potential and guarantee his health. However, there is no need to host him at home or help him from an economic point of view.
Among the most appreciated requisites in support of the candidacy are an academic qualification and/or particular personal and professional skills achieved through specific training useful for carrying out the function of voluntary guardian of an unaccompanied foreign minor, knowledge of foreign languages, proven by relevant certificates , the concrete experience of assistance and accompaniment of unaccompanied foreign minors within voluntary or cultural associations or educational agencies or qualified professional fields.
The outcome of the selection will be notified on the institutional website of the Guarantor Authority for childhood and adolescence and the selected candidates will receive information regarding the scheduled dates for compulsory training. The aspiring volunteer guardians will follow a 24/30 hour training course and will be entered in the register that will be set up at the competent juvenile court of the region of residence. From this register the judge will select a volunteer guardian for each minor or, in the case of siblings, the guardian will be the same for all the siblings.
