Merkel: "Changing the EU treaties to consolidate the euro, we need a mechanism for reforms"

The chancellor calls for a "binding" mechanism for the reforms involving the EU Commission, which however "should not dictate the rules, but decide them in agreement with the States" - "A unitary bank liquidation instrument is needed: never again will it have to be the taxpayer to pay if a bank fails”.

Merkel: "Changing the EU treaties to consolidate the euro, we need a mechanism for reforms"

A modification of the European treaties is needed to consolidate the single currency and implement the reforms. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said this in her first speech to the Bundestag after being sworn in, stressing that "the euro crisis is not over, it shouldn't be forgotten, even if we are seeing the first successes".

The number one of the Government of Berlin calls for a "binding" mechanism for the reforms involving the EU Commission, which however "should not dictate the rules, but decide them in agreement with the States. Germany will be strong if Europe is also strong. In a globalized world, Europe is our common homeland”.

According to the chancellor, “a unitary bank liquidation mechanism is needed: never again will the taxpayer have to pay if a bank goes bankrupt. We want a Europe of stability and growth: the shortcomings in the construction of the EU must be overcome so that they never happen again”.

In the evening Merkel will travel to Paris for her first visit abroad after her re-election as leader of the grand coalition. She will be accompanied by the foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and she will discuss the upcoming EU summit with French President François Hollande.
