Mediaset Premium without football will have a turnover reduced by around 90% to 80 million euros with 600 subscribers (from the current 2 million) and a average monthly expenditure per customer which goes from 24 to 8 euros. This is the 2020 scenario provided by the group during the presentation of the development lines for 2020. Mediaset's management, led by Pier Silvio Berlusconi, presented analysts with a new Premium model which provides for a drastic reduction in exposure to football rights, especially as regards the Champions League which will not see Mediaset in the running for licenses, and a general 'slimming cure' of the pay business.
This will bring Premium's turnover from the current 600-680 million (between subscribers and advertising revenues) to around 80-90 million with an estimated cost reduction of 800 million from 2018, when the current Champions League and Serie A licenses will expire: 700 million savings would concern rights and production costs, 100 million other expense items. In this base scenario, Premium would reach break even.
However, according to some analysts present at yesterday's meeting in London, while Mediaset's management has left few openings on the Champions League, Pier Silvio Berlusconi has shown himself to be more possibility that Serie A can somehow find space in the schedules of Premium. The new 'open' model of Premium provides for the possibility of hosting content from other media groups on the digital terrestrial platform as well as providing other non-sports channels created by the Biscione.
