Mattarella: exploratory mandate to Fico until Tuesday

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the end of the first round of consultations, tries to come to terms with the solution to the political crisis and entrusts the President of the Chamber, Roberto Fico, with grillino, the task of exploring the possibility of reconstituting the majority of the outgoing government, as requested by the leader of Italia Viva, Matteo Renzi. Headline the Huffington Post Italia: “Renzi wins the first half”. Fico, after having heard the political forces of the outgoing majority (Cinque Stelle, Pd, Leu and Iv), will report the result of his exploration to the Head of State by Tuesday.

But will the majority still be led by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte? It is possible, but Mattarella did not name names because the solution is by no means obvious and the political confrontation on programs and on the government team will not be easy. Certainly the surprise of the explorer and the long relative times (until Tuesday) granted by Mattarella to Fico certainly do not strengthen Conte.

However, the last round of consultations at the Quirinale certified that, after those of the Pd and Leu, even the Five Stars - represented at the Quirinale by the coordinator Vito Crimi - they dropped the veto on Renzi, provided that the IV leader gives the go-ahead to the Conte ter government. However, the fall of the prejudicial anti-Renzi has sparked war within the Five Stars because the choice made official by Crimi and supported by the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, has unleashed the frond of Alessandro Di Battista, who sees smoke and mirrors openness to Renzi and even threatens the split, and former minister Barbara Lezzi who is asking for a referendum among the members to decide what to do.

In short, there seems to be a glimmer of light for the solution of the government crisis but the final outcome is not yet certain: the next few hours and Fico's attempt will be decisive in this regard. Conte remains the favorite for the return to Palazzo Chigi but sometimes those who enter the pope in the conclave eventually come out as cardinals. And the hypothesis of an institutional government is not entirely excluded, while a return to elections seems excluded, despite the false request of the right, which however reserves the right to evaluate other hypotheses in relation to the evolution of the crisis.
